The 3rd World Conference on Buddhism and Science (WCBS)
on
1st – 2nd December 2010
Organised by
The College of Religious Studies, Mahidol University Thailand, in cooperation with:
The Office of National Affairs of Buddhism; Mahamakut Buddhist University (MBU)
Thailand; Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Imperial College, London;
PTT Exploration and Production Public PCL, Thailand; Santa Barbara Institute for
Consciousness Studies, USA; and Institute of Social and Economic Policy (ISEP), Thailand.
1. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES
This is the third in the series of World Conference on Buddhism. For this year, 2010, the topic
continues the theme of Buddhism and Science. The conference is organized by the College of
Religious Studies, Mahidol University, Thailand, in collaboration with Institute of Biomedical
Engineering, Imperial College, U.K. The Office of National Affairs of Buddhism, Thailand, PTT
Exploration and Production Public PCL, Thailand, Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness
Studies, USA, and Institute of Social and Economic Policy (ISEP), Thailand.
From the two previous conferences, it is clear that Buddhism and Science are allied to each other
in the search for knowledge to enhance human well‐being. Scientific discoveries and Buddhist
insights, though gained through different methods, are more complementary than contradictory.
Cooperation between Buddhism and Science is therefore conceivable. This third conference will
further explore promising areas of research between Buddhism and Science, particularly in the
fields of natural, cognitive, and social sciences. It is hoped that through such explosure, the gap
between Buddhism and Science will be narrowed, thus enabling scientists, Buddhist scholars and
practitioners to work closer together and cooperate in the pursuit of human betterment. The
relationship between Buddhism and the Science will also enable Buddhists to appreciate
Buddhism better; and hopefully, it would benefit the scientific community by utilising core
knowledge of Buddhist physics as part of establishing hypothesis for further observation and
experimentation.
The conference will be divided into 3 parts: (1) the delivery of keynote addresses, (2) the
exploration of special issues in areas such as Buddhism and Natural Science; Buddhism and
Cognitive Science, and Buddhism and Social Science and (3) practical workshops in mindfulness
of breathing and cultivation of loving‐kindness. The keynote addresses will be delivered by 2
internationally known scholars focusing on the contributions Buddhism and Science to human
knowledge and human well‐being. This theme will be further explored by invited speakers whose
research papers will shed light on issues relating to the origin and end of the universe, the nature
of the human mind, genome, and destiny. The presentations will also provide a much needed new
way of thinking about sustainable economic models, and organisational management.
The meditation workshops are the practical side of the conference. Meditation is now widely
accepted as important factor for mental health and well‐being. In Buddhism, there are many
different types of meditation, and each is designed to deal with a particular problem, and to
develop a particular mental state. But the most common and useful among them are: 1)
Mindfulness of Breathing (ānāpānusati) which makes the mind calm and peaceful, and 2) Loving‐
Kindness Meditation (mettā bhāvanā) which practises forgiving and compassion. Each
participant may take part in the workshop which appeals to his or her needs and interests.
3
The number of participants will be about 300, consisting of monks, academics, and students from
all around the world. The Conference will be conducted in the English language. However, for the
Thai audience, highlights the presentations will be translated into Thai and projected onto a
screen.

4. CALL FOR PAPERS
4.1 SCOPE
The purpose of the Buddhism World Conference is to bring together researchers, scientists,
Buddhist scholars, and practitioners interested in the convergence of Buddhism and Science.
The main objective is to expose participants to the complementary contributions made by
Buddhism and Science to our understanding of the self, the world and to fulfill human potential.
This objective will help to bridge the gap between Religion and Science and bring scientists,
scholars and pious Buddhists, closer to one another and cooperate in the pursuit of world
betterment.
There will be about two to three hundred international participants. To emphasis the
importance of convergence of Buddhism and Science, some participants will include under
graduate/graduate students and ascetics in Science and Buddhist studies from various
universities both in South East Asia.
4.2 Conference scope
Each of these topic areas is expanded below but the sub‐topics list is not exhaustive. Papers may
address one or more of the listed sub‐topics, although authors should not feel limited by them.
Unlisted but related sub‐topics are also acceptable, provided they fit in one of the following main
topic areas: 1) Buddhism and Natural Science, 2) Buddhism and Cognitive Science, 3) Buddhism,
and Social Science, and 4), Workshops in mindfulness of and cultivation of loving‐kindness and
compassion. Please see schedule of the conference in Section 9.

6. SUBMISSION GUIDLINES
6.1 General
Authors should submit an original paper in English, carefully check for correct grammar and
spelling, using the online submission procedure. Please check the paper formats so that you may
be aware of the accepted paper page limits.
The guidelines for paper formatting provided on the conference website must be strictly adhered
to for all submitted papers. The submission format is the same as the camera‐ready format.
Please check and carefully follow the instructions and templates provided.

5
6.2 Paper submission types
There are three types of submissions namely 1) "full paper" presents a work where the research
is completed. It takes 30 minutes of oral presentation, 2) "short paper" which takes 20 minutes of
oral presentation but the work research can be completed or almost finished, and 3) "poster"
presents a similar research work as the above items but less academic contents. However
authors can send Title and Abstract prior to the submission of both papers ‐‐full and short. Poster
presentation can be submitted without sending Title and Abstract for review.
6.3 Position paper submission
A position paper presents an arguable opinion about an issue. The goal of a position paper is to
convince the audience that your opinion is valid and worth listening to, without the need to
present completed research work and/or validated results. It is, nevertheless, important to
support your argument with evidence to ensure the validity of your claims. A position paper may
be a short report and discussion of ideas, facts, situations, methods, procedures or results of
scientific research (bibliographic, experimental, theoretical, or other) focused on one of the
conference topic areas. The acceptance of a position paper is restricted to the categories of "short
paper" or "poster", i.e. a position paper is not a candidate to acceptance of "full paper".
6.4 Final submission
After the reviewing the Title and Abstract is completed, the the authors who submit the paper
will be notified of the result, by email. The authors are required to follow the reviews in order to
improve their papers before final submission.
6.5 Remarks about the online submission procedure
A "double‐blind" paper evaluation method will be used. To facilitate that, the authors are kindly
requested to produce and provide the paper, WITHOUT any reference to the author's personal
details, the acknowledgements section and any reference that may disclose the author's identity.
LaTeX/PS/PDF/DOC/DOCX/RTF formats are accepted. The online submission procedure
automatically sends an acknowledgement, by email, to the author.
6.6 Paper formats
Format of title and abstract sending before final submission can be of any type fitting A4.
However, there are three types of papers for the Conference, namely:
a) Abstract: the length of an abstract should be not more than 400 words.
b) Full Paper are allocated 30 minutes for oral presentation (including discussion). These papers
are assigned an 8‐page limit in the conference proceedings.
c) Short Paper are allocated 20 minutes for oral presentation (including discussion). These
papers are assigned a 6‐page limit in the conference proceedings.
d) Poster presented are assigned a 4‐page limit in the conference proceedings.
If absolutely needed, it will be allowed to increase the total number of pages by a maximum of 4
extra pages. However, for each extra page, the author will have to pay an additional fee.
The total number of pages will be determined after the paper is correctly formatted according to
the template. The author who has an accepted paper, irrespective of the paper type (full paper,
